Look closely at the two players on your shoulders. On one side, the angel of the body – the Yetzer Hara, pulling you toward the earth, the pleasures and the noise. On the other side, the angel of the soul – the Yetzer Tov, pulling you up toward the light. Day and night they play their endless game of matkot, hitting back and forth, never letting the ball fall to the sand.
And the ball? It is an eye – the "I", the self, the one they are both playing for. Our sages teach that a person must serve Hashem "bechol levavcha" – with both inclinations (Berachot 54a). The two angels are not really enemies; together they keep us in balance, so we can rise high without losing our ground. Tock... tock... tock... the holy rally of life. Keep the ball in the air.
