Most survivors do not look like heroes. They look like the bus driver at six in the morning, the nurse on the night shift, the student who works and studies, the parent who counts every shekel and still smiles at the kids. They are the real Babylon Survivors.
The dignity of work
Jewish tradition gives great honor to people who work with their hands. The Sages taught that a person who enjoys the fruit of their own labor is greater than one who only fears Heaven without working. Work is not a curse. It is a way to stand on your own feet.
When work is not enough
But in modern Babylon, many people work hard and still cannot get ahead. The Torah knew that poverty would not disappear by itself: "The poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you: open your hand to your brother" (Deuteronomy 15:11). Survival is not only personal. It is a shared responsibility.
Small survival tools
- Give a little, even when you have little. Giving reminds us that we are not only needy.
- Protect one hour a week that belongs only to you and your family.
- Say thank you, out loud, for the small things that went right today.
