Jews and Non-Jews in the Same Boat: What the Story of Jonah Teaches Us

One of the most famous storms in the Bible happens on a small ship. The prophet Jonah runs away from his mission, and the sea begins to rage. On the ship are sailors from many nations, and "each man cried out to his own god" (Jonah 1:5).

One storm, many people

The sailors did not share a language or a religion. They shared a boat. When the waves rose, it did not matter who was who. Everyone was in danger, and everyone needed the storm to stop.

Our storm today

The modern storm has many names: the cost of living, the housing crisis, loneliness, addiction to screens, the feeling that life is a race with no finish line. It hits Jews and non-Jews alike. This is the shared reality of Babylon.

Seek the peace of the city

When the Jews were exiled to Babylon, the prophet Jeremiah told them something surprising: "Seek the peace of the city where I have sent you... for in its peace you will have peace" (Jeremiah 29:7). The welfare of the Jews and the welfare of their neighbors are connected. We rise together or we sink together.

Unplug together

Babylon Survivor started the Unplug Society for this reason: to invite everyone to step out of the noise and remember what really matters. The Unplug Society hoodie is for every person on the boat.
