August 3rd, 1492. On the very same days that the last Jews were forced out of Spain by the Edict of Expulsion – around Tisha B'Av, the day of destruction – Christopher Columbus set sail from the port of Palos toward the unknown. Coincidence? Some researchers believe Columbus came from a family of Conversos – Jews forced to convert under the Inquisition – who kept their identity hidden. His own Book of Prophecies is full of verses from the Hebrew prophets, and in it he wrote that the wealth of the new world should serve the return to Jerusalem and Mount Zion.

This is our theory: Columbus didn't just discover a continent – he lit the fire of a new home, a land where Jews who fled persecution could finally live in freedom, and a big brother that would one day stand beside the young brother, Israel, as it returns to its land.
