In Tel Aviv, London, New York, Paris or Sydney, young people tell the same story. Most of the salary goes to rent. Buying a home feels like a dream from another century. The towers keep rising, but somehow there is never a place for us.
A global crisis with a local face
The housing crisis is not a problem of one city or one country. It is the shared experience of a generation. Many young people want the same simple things their grandparents had: a roof, a little land, and a life that is not only about paying for that roof.
Babylon was a city of towers
The Bible tells us about the Tower of Babel. The builders said: "Come, let us build a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves" (Genesis 11:4). The Sages tell that when a brick fell, the builders cried, but when a person fell, nobody cared. The building became more important than the human being. Does that sound familiar?
How to survive the rent years
- Remember your value. You are not your rent. Your worth is not measured in square meters.
- Build community. Shared meals, shared rides, shared homes. Survivors survive together.
- Stay close to the earth. A balcony garden, a weekly hike, bare feet on real soil. Small escapes keep the soul alive.
- Keep the dream. The Jewish people prayed for Jerusalem for two thousand years. Long dreams do come true.
