The first human was formed "from the dust of the ground" (Genesis 2:7). In Hebrew, the word for human, Adam, comes from Adamah, earth. We were made from soil. No wonder we feel lost when we live far from it.
Towers instead of trees
Modern cities grow upward. Fields become parking lots, gardens become towers, and the sky becomes a narrow strip between buildings. Many people describe the same feeling: a quiet suffocation they cannot explain.
The ancient warning
The builders of Babel used bricks instead of stone and tar instead of mortar (Genesis 11:3). It was the first story of mass production in the Bible. Their goal was not a home. It was a name, a monument, a tower. Babylon begins when building becomes more important than living.
Five ways to get back to the earth
- Walk barefoot on grass or sand whenever you can.
- Grow one plant, even in a small pot.
- Eat one meal a week outside.
- Visit a farm, a forest or the sea once a month.
- Keep Shabbat or a weekly day without screens, and spend it close to nature.
Walk lighter
The BS slides are for everyone who dreams of walking barefoot on real soil again. Until then, at least walk easy.
